Cheap Evangelism

I was doing a search on Dave Hunt’s book What Love is This, which brought me to Jack Chick’s Website, where I found a Dave Hunt biography. That was interesting to say the least. Anyway, I started to browse the website, and I came across a section entited how to witness. It had sections in there about how to witness in different locations such as the grocery store and garage sales. I was intrested to see what it said. I was thinking it would have information about how to start conversations in different places, but read what it says:

Witnessing Ideas While Shopping

There are endless ideas for tract uses while shopping. Here are some of the most popular ideas.

  • Hand a tract to the cashier
  • Leave tracts on the shelves in the stores
  • Place tracts in the dressing rooms
  • Place a tract in the pockets of the clothes
  • Hand tracts to the passengers on the elevators
  • Leave a tract next to the handrail on the escalator
  • Place a tract under the windshield wiper on the cars in the parking lot

First let me state that I am not opposed to using tracts. My good friend Rhett Kelley became a Christian through the means of a preacher handing out tracts. You can read his story here. But notice how Chick defines witnessing….Witnessing means handing our tracts or leaving them in certain locations. (Chick tracts are along the lines of heresy!) I have seen some tracts that are biblical and these can be very helpful. But they do not replace the command we are given to proclaim the message of the gospel verbally.

Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15, Luke 24:45-48, Acts 1:8, Romans 10, 2 Corinthians 5:18-21

  1. In the past six months my attitude about tracks has changed a great deal. Prior to this change the tracks that I was most familiar with was the not so great/bad ones, like Jack Chicks. I had such a bad view of tracks that I would not pick up and read any of them or pass any out. But since I have talked with the pastor at the church I am serving at I have come to understand that God can use them to draw a person to himself. I even used the grand opening of the casino down the road a few months back to take the opportunity to pass out tracks to those waiting in line. I pray that God was glorified through that and that He will use those tracks to draw the folks here in MS to Himself
